To
celebrate the 30th anniversary of JET SKIŽ
watercraft, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., is
introducing the most technologically advanced
JET SKI watercraft ever to take its position on
the water — the 2003 JET SKI STX-12F. The
STX-12F offers a highly efficient engine design
and ultra low emissions at a lower
manufacturer’s suggested retail price than any
other 2003 four-stroke personal watercraft.
The all-new three-passenger STX-12F watercraft
combines Kawasaki’s proven four-stroke,
four-cylinder technology with the popular design
and features of the highly regarded JET SKI 1100
STX D.I. watercraft. The STX-12F boasts
excellent towing capabilities to pull skiers,
tubers or wakeboarders with ease, and efficient
fuel economy for touring and exploring plus
ample storage for personal items.
“Kawasaki has 30 years of experience in building
high performance, four-stroke engines, from the
original Z-1 motorcycle to the current
generation of NINJAŽ sportbikes,” said Patrick
Kelly, product manager, Kawasaki Motors Corp.,
U.S.A. “Power for the new STX-12F comes courtesy
of the legendary Kawasaki NINJAŽ ZX-12R
motorcycle — one of the most powerful and
advanced engines in the world.”
Adapted for use in a JET SKI watercraft, the
1,199cc water-cooled engine with dual overhead
camshafts pumps out plenty of power for optimum
performance and boasts low emissions while
purring quietly on the water. The
environmentally friendly
STX-12F meets the strictest existing emission
standards for both the Environmental Protection
Agency and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
In fact, the STX-12F already meets CARB’s
ultra-low “three-star” rating, a full five years
ahead of time.
The engine of the STX-12F weighs 11 pounds more
than the engine of the 1100 STX D.I. and is only
slightly larger in overall dimensions. The
STX-12F features dual overhead cams, four valves
per cylinder, fuel injection and an electronic
engine control unit (ECU) that harmonizes the
fuel system and the ignition system to provide
maximum performance and reliability.
The fuel injection system utilizes four
injectors and a single 54mm throttle body to
provide fuel for this NINJA-based engine,
resulting in smooth power delivery and instant
starting in both hot and cold weather.
The engine’s highly tuned exhaust system is
water-jacketed to help reduce underhood
temperatures and keep the STX-12F running as
quietly as possible. The STX-12F also features
dual water mufflers for very low exhaust noise.
The large capacity airbox is specially designed
to reduce noise levels and the engine is
rubber-mounted in the hull.
The STX-12F features an open-loop cooling system
that utilizes an intake filter and draws cooling
water from the jet pump, providing the STX-12F
with consistent operating temperatures for
maximum performance.
Unlike the ZX-12R motorcycle, which uses a
clutch and transmission to supply power to the
rear wheel, the JET SKI STX-12F utilizes a
direct drive axial-flow pump that is connected
to an oval-edge, stainless steel, three-blade
impeller. The STX-12F direct drive has no gear
reduction unit, allowing the STX-12F’s engine to
turn a lower rpm for less stress and wear and
tear, less vibration, less noise and better fuel
consumption. A reverse function allows for easy
maneuverability in tight quarters.
The STX-12F is also equipped with Kawasaki’s
most advanced steering technology — Kawasaki
Smart Steering™. Smart Steering detects the
rider’s steering input as well as the speed of
operation and automatically increases engine
speed to provide additional thrust. The advanced
steering technology continuously monitors engine
rpm to determine if the craft is being operated
at a low or high speed. If the speed is low, the
system does not operate. If the speed is high,
the system will operate, even if the throttle
has been released and the engine has returned to
idle. |
